Web workshop: English-speaking countries

WRITING INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Choose an English-speaking country (except the UK and the USA).
  2. Tell your teacher which country you have chosen. Two students cannot choose the same country. These are the countries chosen so far.
  3. Find information about it on the Internet or in a library.
  4. Find some photos, and one or two maps of the country (see below).
  5. Design and write a webpage with the following information:
  • Name of the country.
  • Situation of the country on a world map.
  • Name and situation of the capital city in the map of the country.
  • Area, population, position in the HDI (Human Development Index).
  • Brief historical information.
  • Main economic activity.
  • Two or three interesting or original facts about the country (geology, zoology, climate, culture, sport,...).
  • Sources for the information and pictures.
SUGGESTED PROCEDURE
  1. Surf the Internet to find an appropriate country. You can find a list of countries whose official language is English in the wikipedia.

  2. Find some maps for your web page.

  3. Don't forget to copy the addresses of all the websites where you find information and pictures. Do it when you copy any information or a picture, don't leave it to the end, because you will not remember all the pages you visited.

  4. Copy the necessary information onto your computer (or take notes on a piece of paper - it could be faster!). Don't copy difficult words or sentences that you don't understand. Write only simple sentences in basic English, or sentences in Spanish which are easy to translate.
Remember: this information is for your classmates. They need to understand everything you write. If you use pages in Spanish, translate only short sentences with simple structures and easy vocabulary, and DO NOT USE AN AUTOMATIC TRANSLATOR.
Visit this link for more help on how to adapt the language.

  5. Organise your information in paragraphs.

  6. Find some interesting images for your web page. Study the example codes and decide where you want to put them. Check the aspect after you add every image. Try to balance text and images.

  7. Check that you have added all the references for the information, maps and images at the end.

  8. Add a link to the index at the beginning (you can also add another link at the end to make navigation easier), and add a link from your index to your page.
FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS
Study the code on the example page and use it as a model to write your webpage. You can make any changes you like, but try to keep a good balance between text and images, and use a light background and dark text.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Read the assessment criteria and do a self-evaluation to calculate what marks you are going to get.
IMPORTANT

Remember these important points:
  • When you have technical problems, questions about grammar or vocabulary, or any other questions, write an e-mail to your teacher explaining your problem or your question clearly.

  • Attach any files that are necessary for your teacher to understand your problem or solve it: for example, if you can't see an image and you don't know why, explain this in your message, and attach your .htm file and your image.

  • Do not send files to your teacher without explaining your problem. These messages will be ignored.

  • Do not send your project before it is finished.

  • When you finish your project, use the assessment criteria to calculate your marks. If you are satisfied, send your page to your teacher, attaching all the image files, and say what marks you expect to get, and why. Example:

Hi, [teacher's name], this is my web page about [country].

These are the marks I expect to get:

Navigation: 2 marks (all the links work)
Information: 3 marks (I think I have all the necessary information).
Language: 2 marks (I don't know if it is very well written, but I think it is mostly correct.)
Design: 2 marks (there are enough images and maps).
    TOTAL MARKS: 9

This is what you MUST NOT do:

Example 1

Now, study this example and calculate the marks: Example 2
Now check the teacher's comment to see if your marks are accurate.

Now, study the third example and calculate the marks: (teacher's comment)
