Lexis. Class procedure

1.- DAY 1 (10 minutes). Explain the classes what the project
consists in (see PROJECT). If they are interested, go on
    with the procedure.

2.- DAY 2 (50 minutes). Computer room.

a) Show them how to download, unzip and run the program.

b) Explain what each file is for (see FILELIST).

c) Give them handouts of the document SAMPLE. They search
for all the example entries so that they see how LEXIS.EXE
works, and I comment on all the features in the example
entries so that they see how the codes work. The LEXIS1.DAT
file can be used instead of the main dictionary to save time if
the computers aren't very fast or if the students tend to get
    distracted easily.

Example entries: idea, con, house, home, casa, in, dream, tired,
    sueño, cansado, in+, colours.

d) If there is some time left, I write on the board a list of other
words for them to look up in the main dictionary LEXIS.DIC:
aburrido, pronto, dos, walk, siguiente, Sunday.

3.- DAY 3 (15 minutes). Ask every student to write two or three
sentences in Spanish or a short text and translate it into
English. They hand them in or e-mail them for correction.

4.- (Second week, two-three days per group) I correct the texts at
home, choose a vocabulary mistake, identify the cause of the
mistake and decide what entries in a dictionary will help
students to avoid that mistake (including the one which
caused the mistake and any related or similar words, and the
Spanish equivalents). If some student has several mistakes, they
can be given the choice of writing several examples.

Then I make a list in which each student is assigned the
    necessary entries.

5.- DAY 4 (10-20 minutes) (third-fourth week, depending on the
number of groups taking part in the project). I give or send
back their sentences and the list of entries each of them has
to deal with, and explain briefly how to write the examples.
They have one week to write their examples.

6.- (One week) At home, they study the example definitions and
write definitions for their list of entries.

7.- DAY 5 (fourth-fifth week). They hand in or e-mail their
definitions, I revise and correct them at home during the next
	 two weeks.

8.- DAY 6 (50 minutes) (seventh week). Computer room. They copy
their definitions onto a computer file called NEW.TXT, in text
format. The first and last lines in the file must be the character #.

They look up a word and from that screen press F10. The file
NEW.TXT will then be added to the LEXIS1.DAT file, and they
can check the way their definitions come out on the screen.

After their files have been revised and corrected if necessary,
they make a copy of the LEXIS1.DAT file, using their initials as a
file name (JJCC.TXT, for example). That way they can all be copied
    onto a single folder.

They send their via e-mail and I revise the new definitions and
add them all to LEXIS.DIC (two weeks).

9.- DAY 7 (ninth week). When all the entries are ready, I upload
the new data file for everyone to download

N.B. Other teachers may use a floppy disk, CD or pendrive to
distribute the program and the new data among the participants
who want to install it onto their computer.
