Lexis Project

1.- The aim of this project is to write a hybrid dictionary for
Spanish students of English to be used on a computer.

2.- This is a collective project. All the material produced will be
free of authoring rights so that every student at the college can
use it freely, and so that it can be modified and improved over
    the next few years.

3.- To take part in the project the whole class must agree to these
conditions. All the classes who want to take part will be allowed
to, no matter what their level of English is. If not everybody in
the classroom wants to participate, then the ones who do will be
able to do so during the Cultural Week.

4.- All the participants in the project who wish to receive a copy on
a floppy disk of the dictionary program and the reference material
can sign up on a list; they will only need to pay for the cost of
the floppy disk (an alternative system is to use a single floppy
disk and to circulate it among the participants in turn).

5.- The project will take up two hours at the computer room and about
one hour of class time, distributed in five days along seven weeks
for students, nine for the teacher. The rest of the work will be
done at home by both the teacher and the students.

6.- Your work will consist in preparing one or several dictionary
entries. Each entry will consist of an example sentence in English
and a translation into Spanish. You can also add other information
(synonyms, definitions, related words, collocation, grammar rules
    on word order, etc.).

7.- You can use the dictionaries in the library to get help on the
meanings and use of words, but you MUSTN'T COPY DEFINITIONS OR
EXAMPLES from the dictionaries, as they have authoring rights.

8.- The estimated duration of the project is of about nine weeks, but
if you or your teacher need more time, then the time limit can be
    extended.

9.- You will have to do the follwing:

	- Write a short text in English (15 minutes).
	- Get a list of related words to work with.
	- Write and translate into Spanish your examples of the English
	  words (one-two weeks).
	- Type your definitions on a computer file (one hour).

10.- Your teacher will have to do the following:

	- Correct your text, choose a basic entry and some related words and
make a list of students and entries (two-three days per group).
	- Correct the example sentences (one-two days per group).
	- Check the data files and add them to the main data file (one-two
	  days per group).
