LEXIS is a project for an electronic dictionary that I am adapting to use it as a glossary in our European Section. It is very easy to use: you only have to write a word or phrase, in English or in Spanish, and press ENTER. LEXIS will show you a translation or an example so that you can see how it is used in a real sentence. To look up another word, press ESC and you will go back to the introduction screen.

To exit the program, you just press ENTER without writing any words. That's it.

Words with several meanings appear as different entries, so you have to read carefully all the examples to identify the context which is most similar to the one you want (the same as in any good dictionary). When you look up a technical term, LEXIS will tell you in which subject it is used (some of them can be used in several subjects, for example, if you look up "soft pencil" you will find it under Art and Technology).

So far it only includes a glossary for the first year of Art and most of the classnotes for Music, because the economic crisis afflicting us since 2008 has meant a reduction in the number of teachers and therefore in the work load of those of us who remain, despite claims on the contrary by educational authorities from both traditional parties, which means I do not have enough time to continue working on this project. In coming years I hope I will be able to add technical terms for the other subjects that are taught in our European Section.

If you want to help with this project, let me know when you cannot find a word that you think should be included in LEXIS, so that I can add it. You can ask for Juan José at the staff room, or to me.

Download DOSBox with the most recent versions of both MOUSE and LEXIS (for linux and Windows).

To download the .zip file with the program, click on the icon or the link above, then unzip that file in your computer and double-click on C:\DOSBox_MOUSE\DOSBoxPortable.exe. Here are some step-by-step instructions if you need them.

Download the glossary only (the latest version, from September 2019).

If you have made changes to the main auxiliary files and you don't want to lose them when updating the dictionary, you can download only the latest version of the main data file, LEXIS.DIC (the version included in the .zip files is from September 2019).

If you have Windows 98 or a previous 16- o 32- bit version, including MS-DOS, you can run LEXIS straight away, and you will only need the files in in the E:\DOSBox_MOUSE10\LEXIS folder. You can move them to another folder if you wish.

Read this section if you are using a non-Spanish keyboard or have any other problems with special characters.
