- What are the problems in the traditional classroom?

- If you do not understand the teacher's explanation, you have to ask the teacher to repeat it.
- Some students do not need a repetition, and they get bored.
- Some students still do not understand it, but they generally do not ask for a second repetition.
- At home you can only use the book or your classnotes to do the homework.
- Some students cannot do the homework alone because they do not understand it yet.
- The teacher cannot help you. Your classmates cannot help you.
- The homework is corrected in class. The teacher explains it again for students who do not understand it well yet.
- Many students get bored.
- You take an exam.
- If the results are good, we move on to new things. Some people still have problems,
and it is more difficult for them to understand the new things. Their results are usually not very good.
- If the the exam results are bad, we repeat everything again (this time it is boring for more people).
- What is the flipped classroom?
It is a different way of working:
- New methodologies are used: CLIL, problem-based learning, project work.
- New technologies are used: web pages, videolessons, screencasts, interactive exercises, virtual classrooms.
- What are its advantages and disadvantages?
These are the main advantages (see below for details):
- Lessons are more interesting for everyone (less repetition of boring explanations).
- Homework really helps students to understand and learn, not only to practise what they already know.
- Students with more problems have more time to learn things at their own pace.
- Lessons are more participative.
- Parents do not need to help their children do the homework, but they can control it.
These are the main disadvantages:
- The teacher has to work very hard to find or create teaching materials.
- The teacher has to prepare lessons very carefully.
- It is not useful for lazy students who do not do the homework (they will get bored in class, the same as in a traditional class).
- It is not interesting for students who do not participate in class (they will get bored, too).
- Some parents find it difficult to understand how it works and what advantages it has.
- You can watch a videoclip with the teacher's explanation.
- Some students do not need a repetition, and they need not watch it again, so they do not get bored.
- If you do not understand it, you can watch it again. And again. And after two days. And before an exam.
You need not ask the teacher to repeat it.
- You can do the "homework" in the classroom, with your classmates' help, with the teacher's help.
- Students who need to watch the videoclip three times can do the exercises now.
- Students who still have problems can get help and do the exercises.
- Students who finish quickly can help others. Remember: the best way to learn something is to explain it to someone.
- You can evaluate yourself before the exam.
- If you still have problems, the teacher has more time to help you in class.
- When you have to do a project, you can prepare your materials in groups, in class, with the teacher's help.
- The teacher has more time to help you with your project in the classroom.
