Basic word processors (no text attributes): EDIT Notepad Notepad++ (Notepad Plus Portable). Intermediate word processors (some text attributes): Wordpad Advanced word processors (full text attributes, tables, images, etc.): Word Open Office ===== EDIT ===== ADVANTAGES: It is included in the Windows O.S. (edit.com, it is usually in C:\WINDOWS\system32, but it is not in the programs menu). It opens immediately. It is very easy to use. It can find and replace text. It can open several different documents at the same time. It shows the line and column number. It indents text automatically. DISADVANTAGES: It is very basic. It cannot undo mistakes. It is useless to print even short documents. It can't work with anything but basic characters (no text attributes). It uses MS-DOS ASCII characters, not Windows ANSI characters, so some letters (ñ, á, ª) look different. ======== Notepad ======== ADVANTAGES: It is included in the Windows O.S. (notepad.exe, it is usually in C:\WINDOWS, and in the Accessories menu). It opens immediately. It is very easy to use. The newest version can find and replace text, and undo mistakes. DISADVANTAGES: It is much more basic than any other word processor. The first versions (up to Windows XP) could not even find and replace text, or undo mistakes. It is useless to print even short documents (it cuts even very short lines and leaves empty lines). It can't work with anything but basic characters (no text attributes). ========== Notepad++ ========== ADVANTAGES: It is freeware (downloadable from http://portableapps.com/apps/development/notepadpp_portable). You don't need to update it regularly. You don't need to install it. It can be used as portable freeware from a pendrive on any computer. It allows editing using several different languages, such as .html, .xml, .ccs, java, etc. It uses colour codes to point out format mistakes and improve readability. It can open several different documents at the same time, and replace text in all of them at once. It saves your last work session, including all open documents and selected text, so you can continue working exactly where you stopped. It can be used as an FTP server to upload web pages. It shows the line number. You can configure the colours and many other editing options. DISADVANTAGES: It is useless to print even short documents. It can't work with anything but basic characters (no text attributes). It doesn't open as fast as the more simple word processors. ========= Wordpad ========= ADVANTAGES: It is included in the Windows O.S. (wordpad.exe or write.exe, it is usually in C:\WINDOWS\system32, and in the Accessories menu). It opens very fast. It is easy to use. It can use text attributes. It can open some .doc documents, and edit things that it can't write. DISADVANTAGES: It is much more basic than Word. It lacks many basic functions, and it's not good to print long documents. It is really difficult to work with tables. ====== Word ====== ADVANTAGE: Very advanced, with many menu options, it can format complex documents including images, it can save to different formats, including .html (but it clogs it with a lot of useless code). It is good for printing, but if you work with a different version or in a computer with a different printer, the format is altered. DISADVANTAGES: Although it is widely distributed, new versions write documents which you can't open with old versions. It is expensive, and you have to update it regularly (or use pirate software). Documents can contain viruses. It is very difficult to use, there are many menus and options, paragraph formatting (tabulators, indented paragraphs) can be really complicated. It is slow to open, especially to load long documents. Old versions repeat many codes, and simple documents get very big. Images load very slowly. It is compatible with most formats, but it cannot open Open Office documents. Registered versions update automatically, and the new versions can work more slowly. =========== Open Office =========== ADVANTAGES: Very advanced, with many menu options, it can format complex documents including images, it can save to different formats, including .html (but it clogs it with a lot of useless code).
